Gokyo Valley Trek

The Gokyo Lake Trek is an epic adventure that takes you to the heart of the Himalayas, where you will witness some of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet. The trek starts in Lukla, a small mountain town in the Everest region of Nepal, and takes you through several remote Sherpa villages, high mountain passes, and glacial lakes. Along the way, you will be treated to stunning views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu.

The trek starts from Lukla and takes about 14-16 days to complete, depending on the itinerary you choose. The trek passes through several remote Sherpa villages, including Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo. You will have the opportunity to experience the local culture and lifestyle of the Sherpa people and witness their traditional practices and customs.

Highlights of the Gokyo Lake Trek:

  • Gokyo Lakes: The trek takes you to the beautiful glacial lakes of Gokyo, which are situated at an altitude of 4,750m. The lakes are a stunning turquoise color and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, offering some of the most breathtaking views in the region.

Difficulty:

The Gokyo Lake Trek is a challenging trek that requires a good level of physical fitness and endurance. The trek takes you to high altitudes, with the highest point reached being the Gokyo Ri viewpoint at 5,357m. The terrain is rugged and often steep, with several high mountain passes to cross, including Cho La Pass (5,420m) and Renjo La Pass (5,360m). The weather can be unpredictable, with sudden changes in temperature and the possibility of snowfall, making it essential to pack appropriate clothing and gear. Altitude sickness is also a concern on this trek, so it is essential to acclimatize properly and listen to your body.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

You'll start your journey to the Himalayas by taking a flight to Kathmandu. When you arrive, our representatives will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel for check-in. You can then rest at the hotel and spend the night there.

Day 02: Sightseeing of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur city

You'll take a guided tour of four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Durbar Square has palaces of medieval Kings, while Pashupatinath houses a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva and a famous Hindu funeral site. Boudhanath is a large and holy Buddhist shrine with over 50 nearby Tibetan monasteries. Swayambhu, or the Monkey Temple, is known for its monkey population. Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square are also UNESCO sites to visit. Bhaktapur has a preserved local lifestyle, and its city square has temples, palaces, and water spouts. You'll spend the night at a hotel.

Day 03: Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft) 30 minutes flight and 4 hours walk

We'll take a private vehicle to Tribhuvan International Airport and board a scenic 30-35min flight to Lukla (2,800m), the gateway destination. After breakfast and meeting the crew, we'll trek for four hours towards Phakding, experiencing downhill and flat trails with prayer rocks and a beautiful view of Lukla village. We'll reach Phakding, freshen up, and take a short walk to the village or nearby monasteries for acclimatization. We'll spend the night at a hotel or lodge.

Day 04: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m/11,283ft) 5-6 hours walk

After breakfast, we'll leave our lodge in Phakding and head towards Monju, the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park. Along the way, we'll cross many suspension bridges and pass small settlements like Zapute, Toktok, Benkar, Chumoa, and Monju. Your leader will take care of park formalities while you can explore small tea houses and shops. The trail then descends steeply to the river, crosses another suspension bridge, and leads uphill to the Namche Bazaar. Here, you'll get the first view of Mt. Everest and Mt. Kusum Khangru. We'll spend the night at a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 05: Acclimatize at Namche

Namche Bazaar is an important trading center in the Khumbu region and a popular place for altitude acclimatization. To adapt to the weather and altitude, we organize a short hike to Thame or a visit to Khumjung/Khunde/Khongde. Namche Bazaar offers various activities such as visiting the National Park Head office, Museum, and monasteries. You can also enjoy your own time at cafes, shops, bakeries or restaurants. There are also essential services like a post office, hospital, and internet access. This is where you can contact your family before continuing towards the Everest Base Camp. We will spend the night at a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4040m.) via Khumjung- 6 Hours

We continue our trek to Dole from Namche Bazaar, taking the same route towards Everest Base Camp until we reach Sanasa. From there, we climb up to Mongla (4000m) and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of various mountains. We then trek downhill through Phortse Tenga and climb steeply up to Dole, passing through beautiful rhododendron and birch forests adorned with hanging mosses and lichens. We spend the night at a guesthouse in Dole.

Day 07: Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4150m)- 5 hours

We'll be hiking uphill from Dole, and the vegetation around us will gradually change as we climb higher. We'll pass by summer settlements used for yak grazing, and as we go further up, we'll see stunning views of Cho Oyu. Looking back, we can see the peaks of Kantega and Thamserku. We'll spend the night at a guesthouse.

Day 08: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo (4750m)-5 Hours

Today we will trek towards the lakes of Gokyo. The trail will take us to Pangka, where we will descend slightly to follow a river formed by the Ngozumpa Glacier. Then we will climb a steep rocky incline and pass by the first holy lake. We will continue towards the second lake and cross the path that leads to Cho La. Finally, we will reach the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, and continue walking by its side until we arrive at Gokyo. We will spend the night at a guesthouse.

Day 09: Rest day at Gokyo and excursion around Gokyo valley & Lake

We'll spend some time exploring Gokyo, which is a bustling hub for trekkers. It's located near the huge Ngozumpa glacier. We'll take a walk around the beautiful lake and, if you're up for it, we can also visit the fifth lake. We'll spend the night at a guesthouse.

Day 10: Trek/climb from Gokyo to Gokyo Ri (5483m) and trek back to Machhermo 6-7 Hours

After breakfast, we will climb a steep path to reach the summit of Gokyo Ri, which offers stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. Later, we will trek to Machhermo and spend the night at a guest house.

Day 11:Trek from Machhermo (4150m) to Namche Bazaar (3440m)- 5 hours

After leaving Machhermo, we will trek back to Dole and then descend to Phortse Tenga, passing through beautiful rhododendron forests. Next, we will climb up to Mongla Danda and then descend gradually to Kyanjoma, before following a path with some ups and downs back to Namche Bazaar where we will spend the night in a guest house.

Day 12: Trek to Lukla (2,652m/8,700ft)

We begin our descent from Namche after breakfast, crossing a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and passing through Monjo, where we complete National Park formalities. We stop for lunch in Phakding before continuing to Lukla along a flat trail with beautiful scenery, including prayer stones, rhododendron and pine forests, prayer flags, and Sherpa villages. This is our final day of the trek, and upon reaching Lukla, we can either spend time with our crew or reflect on the amazing experiences of the past few days. We spend the night in Lukla.

Day 13: Fly to Kathmandu

The trekking journey comes to an end, and we take a flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. To celebrate the completion of the trek, we organize a farewell dinner for our clients and discuss the possibility of future trips.

Day 14:Transfer to the airport for the final departure

Our company representative will accompany you to the airport, approximately 2 hours before your scheduled flight. We hope that you had an amazing experience in Nepal and enjoyed your trekking adventure. We look forward to the possibility of seeing you again in the Himalayas.
