Helambu Trek

Helambu trek is a short trek in Langtang Region. Despite being close (72 km northeast) to Kathmandu this region is mainly unspoilt. This trek is famous for scenic views of mountains- Langtang Lirung, Dorge Lakpa, Gaurishankar, Ganesh Himal, Langshisha Ri, Gyangchempo, Yala peak, etc. and also offers cultural blend of Tibetan Sherpa , highland Tamang people and customary Buddhist community in traditional villages. This is relatively easy trek as the Helambu valley has low elevations (up to 3600m).

Helambu trek begins at Sundarijal which is about 1hr drive from Kathmandu. We trek through Shivapuri National Park dense forest of oak, pine, rhodendron, cultivated fields and meadows to Chisapani, Khutumsang, Tharepati and Melamche Gaun. All along the way we come across some Tamang and Sherpa villages and splendid view of mountains like Anapurna, Manaslu, etc. from the walking trail. Besides the opportunity to explore ancient viallages with rhododendron and bamboo forest, majestic waterfalls we can also explore rare wildlife like red pandas, pika, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Tahr, ghoral, serow, rhesus monkey and common langur. After crossing Melamche river we climb to Tarkeghyang village in Helambu village and then the trails drop down across a number of streams & waterfalls towards Sermathang and finally to Melamchi Pul from where we drive back to Kathmandu.

Helambu trek is short and easy suitable for novice but still offers a wide range of cultural and natural scenery. Best season for this trek is Autumn (Sept to Dec) and Spring(March to May).
